Frequently Asked Questions

Who made this program?

My name is Tim Pitman.  I'm a student at the University of Tasmania studying 3rd year computer systems engineering.  I purchased a Sony MZR-900 MiniDisc recorder in June 2001, so am relatively new to the MiniDisc 'scene'.

Why did you create this program?

I wanted to be able to put music from my computer (mp3s) on to the MiniDisc, without having to manually title and add track marks, a slow and painful process.  After looking around the internet for a cheap computer interface to build, I finally found the interface at www.mironics.com and decided to build it.  After construction, I did not have the money to pay Mironics for their expensive program, so I decided to make my own.

What recorders are supported by your program?

Currently only the MZ-R900 is supported.

When will your program support recorders other than the MZ-R900?

As I only own one MiniDisc recorder, it makes developing for other models very difficult.  If I develop my program to a commercial product and make some money, then I may expand it to other recorders.  If you have a Sony R37 or R55, then try the MD Com Project, http://l.pawlowski.free.fr/mdcom/

What kind of computer is required?

MiniDisc Control Center currently runs only on 32bit Windows systems (Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4 and 2000).  It has been tested on Windows 95 and Windows 2000.  I may release a Linux version if there is sufficient demand.

What is the release model of your software?

MiniDisc Control Center is currently freeware.  I may change it to shareware in future, with a free version supporting basic titling and control functions, and a commercial version with additional functions such as the Winamp interface .

Does your program work with the Mironics commercial interface?

I don't know!  Please tell me.

Why are titles transferred incorrectly?

When using the titling functions, ensure that the MZ-R900 has all of its name bank entries erased.  Also make sure that MiniDisc Control Center is the current program (ie do not minimise it).  It may also help to close other programs beforehand.  The "scroll titles in taskbar" option in Winamp must be disabled.
