parents and children together

Science Parents and Children Together is a package of home science activities combined with professional development and teacher support so that schools can involve parents in science education with a minimum of effort.

Science PACT is based on the idea that students and parents can work at home to collect scientific information which can be used by teachers in the classroom.

It helps students by taking science out of the classroom into the real world, it helps parents be involved in their children's learning and it helps teachers by enlisting parent support and by providing access to a wide range of scientific data for use in the classroom.

It is a very simple process. Teachers send home an uncomplicated science activity for parents and students to work on together. Students bring the results back to school and the teacher uses them as part of the normal classroom activities.

Teachers are provided with activities and documentation so they can implement the project with a minimum of extra work.

The program is suitable for early childood, primary and junior secondary classrooms.

Science PACT has been adapted from the very successful IMPACT mathematics program developed in the UK. It has been re-designed and science activities developed and keyed to the curriculum documents A statement on science for Australian schools and to Science - a curriculum profile for Australian schools.

Here are some sample activities to try.
