working mathematically

a professional development course for teachers

Mathematics - A Curriculum profile for Australian schools contains a Working Mathematically strand which indicates the various outcomes students typically acquire as they develop their mathematical understanding.

The organisers for the strand are:

  • Investigating
  • Conjecturing
  • Using problem solving strategies
  • Applying and verifying
  • Using mathematical language and
  • Working in context

In the course teachers investigate how ideas about working mathematically can be integrated into their teaching. A variety of useful examples and activities will be examined.

A particular focus is the use of open ended problems and challenges to help students develop their abilities to work mathematically.

Workshops on working mathematically are conducted by Dr Rex Stoessiger, Quality Educational Services. Dr Rex Stoessiger is the author of the book Natural Learning and Mathematics (Heinemann, 1992) which explores the use of language learning processes for learning mathematics.
