Devonport is the
largest city on the North West Coast of Tasmania, Australia with a population
of approximately 24 000 people. Devonport is the home port for the 2 new passenger
ferries , Spirit of Tasmania 1 and 2.
Devonport
has many recreational and cultural facilities. These include the Don River
Railway and Museum, Tasmanian Arboretum, Art gallery, Maritime Museum and
numerous historic buildings. A cycling/walking track along the foreshore links
many of the recreational facilities just mentioned.
In
1995 the Devonport City Council instigated
the Decorate Devonport at
Christmas competition. From humble beginnings this competition now involves
over 100 homes and businesses in Devonport each year. Visitors come from all
over Tasmania, interstate and overseas during the month of December to view the
many displays. It is not unusual for over 5000 people to be visiting individual
displays in any one night.
As the
popularity of Decorate Devonport increased, numerous other councils in the
state have encouraged their residents to decorate as well.
