Sir Douglas Mawson - 1882 -1958
English born he moved to Australia in 1884. He joined an expedition headed by British Explorer Ernest Shelton min 1909 in the Nimrod. He was the first to reach the magnetic South pole. He was the only survivor of the journey. Mawson headed more voyages to the Antarctic in 1929 and 1934 concentrating on ocean biology.
Mawson Place on the waterfront in Hobart has been named in his honour.
